Hong Kong Hike: Violet Hill & The Twins

Do this hike if you like hikes that pack a serious punch. There are A LOT of stairs that take you up and down the three peaks. Each one around 430m high. Worth it though.

Duration: 2h from start to finish. Add another 10 minutes to get to the bus stop at the end.

Having been left totally and utterly underwhelmed after hiking Dragon’s Back, I was determined for my next hike to be an absolute gem if I was ever going to do another Hong Kong hike again. I perused my (ever growing) list of hikes to do in Hong Kong and Violet Hill and The Twins sounded pretty perfect for what I was looking for.  Lemme tell you, this time the hike definitely did not disappoint.

To get there, take bus number 6 (NOT 6X) from either Admiralty (MTR exit C1) of Exchange Square (Central MTR Exit A) and get off at Wilson Trail, Stanley Gap Road. Next, start going up the steps, the first of many to come. As you get higher up the first peak, you’ll be able to see Stanley and some outlying islands too.

A little motivation

Even though a good chunk of the hike is made up of long staircases (got to feel bad for the guy who built those), there are some more scrambly parts where you’ll want to watch your step a little. Also, when I was going down the stairs I felt that some of the steps tilted down slightly?! Maybe it was just gravity and the fact that my legs were turning to jelly a bit after going uphill but, seriously, be careful.

You’ll get to a bridge about half way through your hike, you want to keep going straight! After this point, you’ll  get to see views of Tai Tam Resevoir. I went on a cloudy day so I couldn’t see all too clearly but having the clouds roll in around was pretty cool, if a little eerie. I felt a world away from ‘the city.’

Hazy reservoir views

As you near the end of the hike, you’ll come to some wooden signs. You want to take the right, in the direction of Hong Kong Park View. The walk is pretty level from here until you descend back into civilisation. To get back, turn left when you get to the road at the end of the hike and walk down to the bus stop. Take bus number 6 or 6X back to Admiralty or Central.
